The 2001 Hyundai Elantra is a popular compact car made in South Korea. One of the basic maintenance procedures for the Elantra is changing the headlight bulbs. Before you start replacing parts, however, it’s a good idea to troubleshoot the problem so you can avoid unnecessary repairs.

When you notice a failed headlight on your 2001 Hyundai Elantra, replace it right away for your own safety on the road. The 2001 Elantra uses a sealed beam headlight rather than one bulb, so you must replace the whole headlight assembly. The assembly is easy to access from beneath the hood of the car. You can buy a new headlight assembly from an auto parts store or Hyundai dealership.

1. Raise the hood of your Hyundai Elantra and rest it on the support rod. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench, and secure the cable away from the terminal of the battery.

2. Remove the two mounting bolts securing the headlight assembly, using a wrench. The bolts securing the headlight assembly on the Elantra are located just inside the engine compartment.

3. Remove the retaining nut on the headlight assembly, near the top of the assembly. Disconnect the wiring harness from the light assembly by pressing down on the retaining clip and pulling it straight back.

4. Pull the headlight assembly forward out of the car. Insert the new headlight assembly into your Elantra, and reconnect the wiring harness by pressing it straight in until it clicks.

5. Secure the headlight assembly with two mounting bolts and the retaining nut. Tighten them with a wrench.

6. Repeat the process on the opposite headlight if needed. Close the hood and test your new lights to be sure they work properly

Tips: Replace the headlights on your Elantra in pairs to extend the life of your lights.
